Take the leap!

When you first hear a song on Spotify, think you’ve discovered something new and beautiful, but then you recognize that the song has already been streamed over 20 million times. Exactly in that moment you realize that you hardly watch free TV anymore and haven’t listened to the charts for years: the song became a big hit when Vodafone used it in their commercials.

I am talking about “Where the heart is” from the band HAEVN. The Dutch band, founded in 2015 by singer Marijn van der Meer and producer Jorrit Kleijnen, is known for their emotional and powerful pop ballads, often accompanied by piano and electronic elements.

The gentle piano melody combined with the heartfelt vocals is what makes this song something special. On the one hand it descibes the doubts and uncertainties that scare us when the ground beneath us trembles and we don’t know if we’re doing the right thing (the doubt that fades as the world dissolves below). At the same time, the song also gives us courage to follow our hearts, to listen to what we feel, what we think is exactly the right thing to do in that one moment.

When a song grabs me, I play it over and over again at home. Sometimes I ask my kids how they like the song. And I try teach them something about life in connection with the song. So I did here. I took both of them into my arms and told them: If you really like someone and think this person is awesome – tell her! No matter if it is someone at school or someone you meet later in your life. Who knows what you might miss if you leave it unsaid. There are not endless situations where you can find your perfect match. So talk about it, talk about your feelings, talk about what moves you emotionally. Talk to the person that is important to you. Just say that you appreciate someone, that you like someone. Just sharing that with each other is something beautiful and it doesn’t hurt anyone. It may hurt a lot more not to have shared it with the person and to regret it later.

Back to the song. The song also gives us confidence when we hesitate, when we don’t know if we should talk about our feelings. It gives us confidence to leave our comfort zone. Confidence to take a risk. Not to listen to the doubts that may be present in that moment. Just have the courage to take the risk of the leap. To listen to your hearts. Not to think about whether you may fail big times. Rather take the leap without any safety net. Who knows, maybe it’s the leap into the stars that we might miss otherwise (Where the heart is, When the light’s at your side, When the faith is ready, No more guidance, Take the leap of your life. As the ground is shaking, You are falling to the stars, you are falling).”
